How to upgrade to the Wowza Video 2.0 REST API

Applies to: Wowza Video 2.0

This guide explains how to upgrade your account and API integration to the Wowza Video 2.0 REST API. It's for Wowza Video and Wowza Streaming Cloud customers who have existing assets (recordings, video on demand (VOD) streams, or content management system (CMS) asset records) or an API integration. If you're already on the new Wowza Video platform, your existing 1.x API token works with the 2.0 API — no new token is required.

Info
  • When you've moved to the new Wowza Video UI, your existing 1.x API token works with the 2.0 API without any changes.
  • If you haven't moved to the new Wowza Video UI, you won't be able to access version 2.0 of the API. Wowza is migrating customers iteratively.

Wowza Video 2.0 includes the following capabilities:

  • Live streaming with robust customization options
  • Video management including chapters, subtitles, transcription, file management, editing, and VOD content organization with metadata, tags, and categories
  • Player configuration with Wowza Flowplayer, including support for multiple simultaneous players
  • Playlists for organizing VOD content
  • Client-side advertising integration for monetization
  • Analytics covering viewer behavior, content performance, and platform engagement

Which Wowza Video and Wowza Streaming Cloud accounts must upgrade to the 2.0 REST API

If you're a Wowza Video subscriber with no existing assets (recordings, VOD streams, or asset records), you've already been placed in the new Wowza Video experience. You can continue using the 1.11 API, but the /recordings, /vod_streams, and /asset endpoints are unavailable. To work with recordings or VOD content, you must upgrade to the 2.0 API.

If you have assets to migrate, or if you're a Wowza Streaming Cloud customer, an upgrade is required. You need to upgrade if any of the following apply:

  • Your API integration includes assets (recordings, VOD streams, or CMS assets) and needs to be updated to use the Wowza Video 2.0 API.
  • You have a Wowza Streaming Cloud account that must be converted to a Wowza Video account.
  • You have Wowza Video or Wowza Streaming Cloud assets that Wowza will migrate to the new platform on your behalf.

For a detailed comparison of API 1.11 and API 2.0 changes, see the API 1.11 to 2.0 migration lifecycle guide.

Step-by-step upgrade process for the Wowza Video 2.0 REST API

Follow the steps for your account type.

How to upgrade a Wowza Video account with assets managed through an API integration

  1. The upgrade happens at your Wowza Video contract or subscription renewal. Your billing may change.
  2. Wowza notifies you of the estimated time needed to migrate your assets to the new platform.
  3. Wowza contacts you to initiate the upgrade. At this point, begin reviewing the differences between Wowza Video API 2.0 and API 1.11 in the API 1.11 to 2.0 migration lifecycle guide. Wowza schedules a maintenance window for the asset migration — your updated API integration must be complete, tested, and production-ready before this date.
  4. Update your API integration to use API 2.0 in a test environment. If you don't have a dedicated test account, sign up for a Wowza Video free trial to use for testing.
  5. Complete and validate your API 2.0 integration in the development environment.
  6. Wowza migrates your assets to the new platform during the scheduled maintenance window.
  7. After the migration, you receive a confirmation notification and a CSV file mapping your old asset IDs to new ones.
  8. Move your updated API integration into production.
  9. Your account is placed into the new Wowza Video experience.
  10. Start using the Wowza Video 2.0 REST API and the new Wowza Video platform.
